Oh there is nothing like the start of a new year to inspire one to do away with the old and welcome the new. So, with that in mind, I was challenged by Dulux South Africa to redo our bedroom using their new Dulux ColourFutures™ 2018.
Research conducted by the Dulux colour team, together with a group of 11 international experts, revealed a strong overarching trend of consumers wanting to transform their homes into spaces of retreat from the outside world. I think they got their research spot on, because that was exactly the idea we had in mind when we thought about our bedroom makeover.
Their research also helped them identify their Colour of the Year for 2018 which is ‘Pictured Rocks’ – it is a subtle and warm tone of grown-up pink that draws from the tactile qualities of wood and leather, conveying comfort and ease.
Here it is below…
The Colour of the Year – ‘Pictured Rocks’ inspired the ‘Pictured Rocks Palette’. It combines gentle shades of grey-pink, blues and soft cocoa flowing into bolder shades of ink blue and purple.
The three supporting palettes complement Pictured Rocks – ‘The comforting home’, ‘The Inviting Home’ and ‘The Playful Home’.
We wanted our room to be an oasis from the outside world, a place of calm and serenity, after all, it is where we lay our heads down to rest.
We had some ideas in mind but, we didn’t want to leave it to chance, so we did the Dulux ‘Your ColourFutures Quiz, which can help you determine which colours are suited to your personality.
Hubby and I both did the quiz and got the same colour palette – ‘The Inviting Home’:
The Inviting Home brings comfort and convenience to life for those seeking to strengthen bonds and bring family and friends together. Cool shades of blue encourage a clear-headed approach to life, while neutrals and fresh green support the need for connection with the outside world. Softer pastel shades are enhanced by coal and ink blue.
Persona: Typically a space for shared quality time, this is perfect for the open-hearted persona. Inclusive, optimistic and collaborative, it’s a space where they can gather with friends and family, bringing comfort through community. Technology is used sparingly and to bring people together in their homes, while the line between the outside and inside is fluid. Open-plan living is at the heart of this home, preferring gentle, hard-wearing natural fabrics that feel safe.
I remember coming in the room while Kashif was painting and thinking he had finished the one wall and him saying it was only the first coat and yet – the wall already looked complete.
Using the Dulux Visualizer App was also so cool – it helped us see the colour on our walls before the work had even begun!
A change really is as good as a holiday and it’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do to a room and ultimately your mood and even approach to life! I know this little home project with Dulux has inspired us to make other changes in our home and also in our lives – change can be so good for the soul!
